Dance Movement Therapy, Authentic Movement & Dance
"It takes two to know one"
Gregory Bateson

❈ About me
Welcome
My name is Sarah, Sarah Louisa Kato.
I am a "people person", and this - among other things - is reflected in the courses I chose to study, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
As an anthropologist and religious studies degree holder, I have the heart and attitude of a social-cultural worker, the basic training in which I rooted myself.
In 2019, I also graduated as a Dance and Movement Therapist from the "Masters in Arts Therapies" programme at CODARTS, University of the Arts (Rotterdam).
And so "thinking" and "doing" were joined by "moving" and "being".
I started my life as a Cartesian, but on closer inspection, "I think, therefore I am" turned out to be only half of the truth.
❈ What can you reach out to me for?
As a dance and movement therapist, you can work with me if you:
> need time and space and someone providing that time and space, someone who will accompany you on a part of your journey, exploring with you what brings peace or what sets you in motion. Someone who holds up a mirror to you and explores with you the desired or needed transformation.
> if you are good with words and thoughts, but (as a result) are not familiar with the rest of your body.
> have emotions that are stuck and have not yet found expression in your body.
> want to mark events or transitions with a ritual in time, so that you can take another step forward and let go.
> want to explore and change the patterns in your relationships.
> want to get to know your intimate self better and express it in dance and movement.
> feel that a number of themes need to be processed not only cognitively and verbally, but also through the body.
Because sometimes you have known for a long time what needs to change, but is talking not enough or not your way of really bringing about change. Conversely, your body sometimes tries to tell you what it knows and feels, but your head refuses to listen. Then the connection between body and mind is lost.
And sometimes something emerges, out of movement or stillness, from the subconscious to the surface. And what sees the light there, you can work with. It can bring your being into motion. Because movement is life, moving helps you process and transform; without movement, nothing changes.
In addition to therapy sessions, you can also join me for Authentic Movement and (dance) workshops.

About me
About me
My name is Sarah, Sarah Louisa Kato.
I am a "people person", which reflects, among other things, in the studies I chose, as if it were a given. Trained as an anthropologist and religious scholar, I have the heart and attitude of a social-cultural worker, the basic education in which I took root.
In 2019, I complemented this by graduating as a Dance and Movement Therapist from the Masters in Arts Therapies programme at CODARTS, University of the Arts, Rotterdam.
And so "thinking" and "doing" were complemented by "moving" and "being". I started my life as a Cartesian, but "I think, therefore I am" turned out to be only half the truth.
My expertise and love for diversity, migration, culture, cultural heritage, rituals, dance, movement, and introspection reflected in the path I've taken so far.
From a dance project on empowerment with young girls of Roma origin as my first internship/work experience to setting up participatory exhibitions on birth rituals, or coordinating the thematic year on 50 years of migration for the city of Mechelen and exploring what intangible heritage can signify for mental well-being and what it can contribute to dance therapy with people with roots in migration... The themes that play an important role in my life keep recurring.

Seeking out new horizons is also a recurring thread.
I love to travel. Call it self-development or exoticism.
I suspect it's both. In recent years, however, the journey has mainly been an inward one. Encountering oneself without running away must be the most difficult and fascinating journey I have ever undertaken. Not least through the years of Authentic Movement practice, a discipline I have been practising since 2016, under the guidance of Céline Gimbrère, Teacher and Faculty member of the Circles of Four, International Post-Graduate Programme for the Discipline of Authentic Movement (Janet Adler).
And finally, there is dance. Always. Whether it is Roma or Oriental dance, Sufi whirling, classical ballet or tango: dance has always played an important role in my life. From the discipline that ballet teaches to the freedom and holiday feeling of dancing the night away. Or yet: discovering and daring to express your sensual self in Oriental dance, or the expressive transformation "from sadness to joy" that is so characteristic of much of Roma music and dance, and the connection and everything there is to learn from both roles in tango, from the subtlety of leading to the challenge of letting go. All that and more is dancing for me.
Am I perfect at all of this? No, far from it. I wish I could say so, but since my twenties, I have slowly come to realise that I dance for connection, not for perfection. For connection with myself, my surroundings and with others. Dance and movement, in other words, to get to know myself, to (re)connect, to transform and to liberate myself. That realisation gained momentum when I discovered the Danza Duende training and network of Yumma Mudra in 2006, and Michel Raji's Chorésophie work in 2013.
This led me to become a member of Organic'Art asbl and audition for the master's programme in Arts Therapies - "Dance Movement Therapy"- at CODARTS, Rotterdam, and gradually to delve deeper into Janet Adler's Discipline of Authentic Movement.
After years of leading participatory diversity projects in the cultural and cultural heritage sector, I currently work at Werkplaats immaterieel erfgoed (Workshop Intangible Heritage) on the 2003 UNESCO Convention. In addition, as a dance therapist, I give workshops on request. For example, thematic workshops (mainly for women with roots in migration) on homesickness, body image and embodiment & tango at Fedasil, the Flemish Community Centres of Brussels, the Red Star Line Museum and the Maison des Femmes de Schaerbeek.
And finally, there is the new chapter, in which you are now also welcome in my own practice space.

It takes two to know one
It takes two to hold one
Until one knows oneself
Until one can hold oneself
(Sarah Louisa Kato Kaerts)
Special Dedication
In addition to the various therapists I have had the privilege of meeting along the way, friends and family, a special thank you goes to the people*, disciplines and body-oriented practices that have allowed me to experience first-hand the importance of dance, embodiment and body practices for mental and physical well-being over the years.
@Georgia, for convincing me to be on the stage, many years ago, in this tiny Romanian village in the woods. Without you I would maybe never have undertaken my studies at Codarts.
@Sol-Ho for your wisdom and ability to dance and perform from the heart, no matter the internal and external judgements.

It takes two to know one
Until one knows oneself
It takes two to hold one
Until one can hold oneself

❈ Dance Movement Therapy
Dance movement therapy is an experiential, creative therapy that focuses on processing and transformation via the body, through dance and movement as a medium. It is described by the European Association for Dance Movement Therapy (EADMT) as: "the therapeutic use of movement to promote the emotional, cognitive, physical, spiritual and social integration of the individual."
Dance as physical exercise, creative expression and communication, forms the core of dance movement therapy.
From Tangotherapy to moving in complete freedom, based on your inner impulses, and everything in between: together we get what is stuck in movement again through a creative process, in which the body in motion plays a major role, using your existing or to be developed movement vocabulary.
You can join me for individual therapy sessions. Besides that, there are open group sessions with a therapeutic character.

❈ Authentic Movement
The Discipline of Authentic Movement
- meditation in motion -
is a practice that helps you develop body awareness and intimate self-knowledge in the presence of (an)other person(s).
Course of a session
As a "mover", you listen with your eyes closed to what is moving through you. You welcome and observe your movements and the wide range of experiences and forms of expression that animate your body, in the presence of a non-judgmental "witness", who actively follows your journey (and that of the other movers) with open eyes.
This ritual of moving is followed by a ritual of talking about and listening to the experience.
This discipline, developed by Janet Adler, helps you to cultivate your inner witness, a clear and compassionate awareness, an intimate knowledge of yourself in the presence of others, and honours the uniqueness of your person in mutual interdependence.
Dance Dance Dance
- To Every Woman her Dance -
"I know I'm not the best dancer, I hate to practice, and I love to perform. But you know, my friend, I don't care, because if I don't dance, I die. That's why I'm a dancer. I cannot do any other job."
(Sol-Ho Moralez-Nuñez, Mexico)

❈ Oriental & Gypsy Duende
These sessions draw on the undulating movements and sensuality of Oriental dance, as well as rhythms, dance steps and techniques inspired by various Roma dance styles.
Dancing
As a discovery of and ode to your femininity.
Dancing
to give space to your emotions, from sadness to great joy.
Dancing
as an encounter with yourself and the group.
Dancing
until only the magic and fire of the Duende remains.

❈ Danser à deux (for women)
Do you dream of being able to dance with a partner, but for some reason you prefer not to do so in a mixed group, but rather with other women? Then these two sessions might be just the thing for you.
Don't expect a traditional dance class, but rather an exploration of yourself, the space and dancing with another person.
The sessions are based on my background in dance therapy, Danza Duende training (Yumma Mudra), Tango, etc., and are aimed exclusively at women with no experience of partner dancing.
